Food Consumption for the Poor: A Supply or an Income Issue? Evidence from Less-favored Regions in Rural China AgEcon
Zhu, Jing; Hare, Denise; Zhong, Funing.
The world food crisis has brought about heated discussions on policy responses and actions to achieve future stability and security in food consumption for the poor. While many viewing it as a supply proglem and propose to cope with it by incrasing self-supply, there are also propostitions of viewing it more as an income problem. This paper has taken the experience of China into study. Being the most populous nation in the world and with rural low-income and low food consumption groups still a noticeable portion in the rural area, China has devoted strenuous efforts by utilizing various policy approaches. This paper has estimated empirically the impact of different policy measures, i.e., the predominantly used traditional policy aimed at increasing...

Food extraction by the males of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) from cotton leafworm larvae BABT
Pereira,Alexandre Igor de Azevedo; Ramalho,Francisco de Sousa; Rodrigues,Karjoene Cassimiro Vilar; Malaquias,José Bruno; Souza,Jefferson Virgínio da Silva; Zanuncio,José Cola.
In this work, the effect of different densities (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) of 3rd instar Alabama argillacea (Huebner) larvae on food consumption by Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) males was evaluated. The densities established were converted to weight of prey offered: 13.4 mg (one larva), 33.3 mg (three larvae), 54.3 mg (five larvae), 81.8 mg (seven larvae), and 110.34 mg (nine larvae). The quantity of food consumed by P. nigrispinus increased with the prey density. The density of preys did not affect the time spent by the predator to ingest the food. The quantity of food extracted per minute was always higher in smaller densities and lower in higher densities. Males mean body weight did not differ statistically between the treatments tested, and weight gain was...

Fruit and Vegetable Consumption by Low-Income Americans: Would a Price Reduction Make a Difference? AgEcon
Dong, Diansheng; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
Americans’ diets, particularly those of low-income households, fall short of Government recommendations in the quantity of fruits and vegetables consumed. Some proposals suggest that a price subsidy for those products would encourage low-income Americans to consume more of them. This study estimated that a 10-percent subsidy would encourage low-income Americans to increase their consumption of fruits by 2.1-5.2 percent and vegetables by 2.1-4.9 percent. The annual cost of such a subsidy for low-income Americans would be about $310 million for fruits and $270 million for vegetables. And most would still not meet Federal dietary recommendations.

How does it work for Hungarian food consumers? A medium-term analysis AgEcon
Szigeti, Judith; Podruzsik, Szilard.
The accession of Hungary to the European Union (EU) in 2004 was expected to lead to price convergence to the EU levels. The influence of national and EU policies on Hungarian producers and consumers is important as they were facing a new situation. Consumers’ welfare depends on the constantly altering world- and common market, and political actions. The purpose of this study is to analyse welfare changes and distributional impacts on Hungarian food consumers. The paper focuses on Laspeyres index, compensating variation and elasticities of demand.

How Low-Income Households Allocate Their Food Budget Relative to the Cost of the Thrifty Food Plan AgEcon
Blisard, Noel; Stewart, Hayden.
By allocating their food budgets in accordance with USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan (TFP), which serves as a national standard for a low-cost nutritious diet, low-income U.S. households can meet recommended dietary guidelines. This study sought to determine whether selected types of low-income households allocate their food budgets in accordance with the TFP. In addition to expenditures for total food and food-at-home, the study looked at four large food-at-home categories: meats, cereals and bakery goods, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. The analysis found that low-income households as a whole spent about 86 percent of the TFP costs for food at home. These households spent slightly over the TFP amount (102 percent) on cereals and bakery goods, but only...

Income-elasticity of poultry meat consumption in metropolitan areas of Brazil Scientia Agricola
Bacchi,Miriam Rumenos Piedade; Spolador,Humberto Francisco Silva.
Studies on the meat market behavior may result in interesting parameters for the market and public policy agents. The definition of the income-elasticity of poultry consumption enables the elaboration of prospective analysis on the potential demand of this product. Thus, the main objective of the present study is to estimate the income-elasticities of poultry consumption. Data from the 1995-96 and 1987-88 Consumer Expenditure Survey, published by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), were used in the analysis. The elasticities were obtained by fitting a three-segment polygonal curve relating the logarithm of the per capita poultry meat consumption as a function of the per capita family income. Generalized Least Squares method was used for...

Is Dietary Knowledge Enough? Hunger, Stress, and Other Roadblocks to Healthy Eating AgEcon
Mancino, Lisa; Kinsey, Jean D..
Poor diets and rising obesity rates among Americans have persisted despite increased awareness and publicity regarding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. This analysis of consumer food choice developed a consumer demand model to illustrate how both long-term health objectives and immediate visceral influences—long intervals between meals and away-from-home eating—can affect individuals’ food choices. The model predicts that dietary knowledge will have less influence on food choices in the face of immediate visceral factors. The model predictions were tested using data from the 1994-96 Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals and the companion Diet Health and Knowledge Survey. Longer intervals between meals and consumption of more food away from...

Is Obesity a Result of Faulty Economic Policies? The Case of the United States and Japan AgEcon
Senauer, Benjamin; Gemma, Masahiko.
More than one billion adults are overweight worldwide, and more than 300 million of them clinically obese, raising the risk of many serious diseases. Only 3.6 percent of Japanese have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, which is the international standard for obesity, whereas 32.0 percent of Americans do. A total of 66.5 percent of Americans have a BMI over 25, making them overweight, but only 24.7 percent of Japanese. This paper examines the reasons Japan has one of the lowest rates of obesity in the world and the United States one of the highest, giving particular attention to underlying economic factors that might be influenced by policy changes. The average person in Japan consumes over 200 fewer calories per day than the average American. Food prices are...

Let's Eat Out: Americans Weigh Taste, Convenience, and Nutrition AgEcon
Stewart, Hayden; Blisard, Noel; Jolliffe, Dean.
Whether eating out or buying carry-out, Americans are consuming more and more of their calories from full-service and fast-food restaurant fare. The share of daily caloric intake from food purchased and/or eaten away from home increased from 18 percent to 32 percent between the late 1970s and the middle 1990s, and the away-from-home market grew to account for about half of total food expenditures in 2004, up from 34 percent in 1974. Analysis of a survey of U.S. consumers indicates that respondents want convenience and an enjoyable dining experience, but the desire for health also plays a role as does diet-health knowledge.

Moving Toward the Food Guide Pyramid: Implications for U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Young, C. Edwin; Kantor, Linda Scott.
Recent studies show that average diets differ considerably from Food Guide Pyramid recommendations. The gap between current consumption and recommendations is particularly large for caloric sweeteners, fats and oils, fruits, and certain vegetables, notably dark-green leafy and deep-yellow vegetables, and dry beans, peas, and lentils. The change in food consumption needed to meet Food Guide Pyramid serving recommendations will result in adjustments in U.S. agricultural production, trade, nonfood uses, and prices. The net adjustment in crop acreage is projected to be relatively small, about 2 percent of total cropland in 1991-95. However, this small net adjustment masks larger anticipated changes for some sectors, particularly sweeteners, fats and oils, and...

Novel approach for testing the food limitation hypothesis in estuarine and coastal fish nurseries ArchiMer
Tableau, Adrien; Le Bris, H; Saulnier, E; Le Pape, Olivier; Brind'Amour, Anik.
Survival success of early life stages of fish is regulated by density-dependent effects, but the limiting factors explaining these effects have not been well identified. In coastal habitats, juveniles of many fish species occur in high concentrations and possibly compete for food resources. This study compared the ratio of food consumption to benthic prey production to test whether food availability is a major factor defining the carrying capacity of fish nurseries. We developed a method to quantify the exploitation efficiency (also called ecotrophic efficiency) of the juvenile fish feeding on benthic prey, expressed as a ratio of food consumption to food production. This method includes many sources of uncertainty and a key parameter of prey...

Palatability enhancing nutrients for the European eel, Anguilla anguilla L. OMA
Pacolet, W.; Reynders, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
Feeding experiments with European glass eels Anguilla anguilla L. demonstrated a high degree of attractiveness for the natural diets Tubifix and cod roe. Previous experiments had indicated that incorporation of bovine spleen and/or blood into paste feeds significantly improved the growth rate and survival. To increase feed consumption, the effect of some basic components available from the current generation of chemo-attractants were evaluated. Using a modified Omission Test Procedure, we focused on monosodiumglutamate, betaine, the nucleotides IMP and GMP, and fractions of cattle blood. These components were incorporated into non-attractive casein-based test diets and administered following standardized procedures to intensively...
